EITC FACTS
As many as 40,000 households fail to file for the EITC
Up to $80 million in federal EITC money is left unclaimed by Utahns each year
An increase of 10,000 households that qualify for EITC could bring an additional $17 million in direct payments to Utah – generating up to $63 million in additional economic activity.
You do not have to have children to qualify! This misconception about EITC may contribute to the unclaimed credits by many Utahns.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
VITA is a program implemented through the statewide Earn It. Keep It. Save It. Coalition made up of local community partners. The coalition works to recruit volunteers that provide free tax preparation services to low to moderate-income households. In addition the coalition seeks out sites, educates the public about VITA, and works to offer financial education to help families out of poverty. In 2009, more than 14,500 free returns were completed by over 650 volunteers helping Utahns claim more than $5.6 million in EITC and other tax credits. Additionally $2.1 million estimated tax preparation fees were saved.
Earn It. Keep It. Save It. also offers asset formation programs such as Utah Saves and the Utah Individual Development Account Network in partnership with EITC and VITA. This helps provide financial education, supports and incentives to assist Utahns in improving their financial knowledge and in forming long-term assets to improve their economic stability and well-being. IDAs offer low to moderate-income Utahns matched savings for the purchase of a home, small business or higher education, and Utah Saves helps all Utahns gain the information and support needed to reduce debt and increase their savings.
