Virtual VITA uses internet communication to deliver tax preparation services to areas where there is a lack of certified volunteers and accessing a traditional VITA site is not feasible.
Developed by USU Extension and Earn It. Keep It. Save It. of Utah in 2007 to serve Utah's rural areas; the procedure is now being used nationwide and is adaptable to fit coalition's various needs and resources.
Virtual VITA Basics
Virtual VITA involves an intake site connected via the internet with a preparation site. At the intake site, a non-certified volunteer greets taxpayers, scans documents, and connects via Skype to the tax preparers. At the preparation site, certified volunteers prepare and quality review returns while communicating and sharing their screen with the taxpayer. Once the tax return is printed and signed at the intake site, the certified volunteer e-files the tax return.
